Find out moreIt is important to understand what’s involved on the day of your procedure at Alexandria Specialist Day Hospital so you know what to expect and how to prepare. If you have questions or concerns about the day of your procedure please contact our team who will be more than happy to assist.
- If you are a diabetic, DO NOT take your insulin, diabetic tablets or oral hypoglycaemics unless otherwise instructed by your surgeon or anaesthetist. - Please bring ALL medications with you to be taken after your procedure, in particular insulin On the day of admission, please take the lift to Level 1 where you will be welcomed by a Concierge, who will promptly guide you to the appropriate admissions desk where Admissions staff will: You will be met by the Admissions Nurse who will take you to the pre-operative area in the Theatre Suite on Level 1. Here the nurse will confirm your personal details, medical history, details of your procedure and your signature. The nurse will record observations such as blood pressure, pulse, temperature and weight. If at this stage, you need any further explanation about your procedure the admissions nurse will ask for your surgeon to speak to you before you go into theatre. Your details will be confirmed with you several times prior to your procedure by the anaethetist and theatre staff. This is our formal patient identification process to make certain that the arrangements are correct for you before you go into theatre. Your Anaesthetist will meet you before you go into theatre to explain the anaesthetic process, answer any questions you may have , and carry out a medical examination. You will be taken into the operating theatre / procedure room and introduced to the team who will be looking after you. Again, you will be asked to confirm your name, date of birth, and the procedure you are there for. Your anaesthetist will then put you to sleep, you will have your procedure and then wake up in the Recovery Room. If you are having a local anaesthetic you will be awake for your procedure, but you WILL NOT feel anything. After your procedure you are taken to Recovery Room Stage 1, where you wake up. The nurses will take you observations and administer pain relief if you need it. As soon as you are alert and stable, you will be assisted to a recliner chair in Recovery Room stage 2, where the nurses will continue to care for you. You will be offered something to eat and drink. Children may be slower to recover and not fully recovered from their anaesthetic for up to 36 hours, which is why it’s important to have 2 people escorting children under 10 home. If you are feeling up to it, we will ask you to complete our Patient Satisfaction Survey before you leave as we would like to know what you think of our care and services so we can continue to develop and improve. Most importantly, if you experience any problems during your stay, please ask to talk to the Clinical Services Manager immediately. The Recovery Nurse will contact your escort to collect you from the Recovery Area. You and your escort will be given written and verbal discharge instructions regarding your post-procedure care.
